Introduction

Following the courses of Applied and Engineering Seismology graduates acquire skills in Seismology (inversion and calculation of seismic parameters, propagation of elastic waves, Seismotectonics, fault rupture models etc.) and Engineering Seismology (ground motion simulations, probabilistic seismic hazard assessment, site-effects on the seismic motions, spectra of ground motion components; among others), and attend classes on Soil Mechanics and Soil Dynamics. Graduates gain expertise on the following: installation and operation of mobile seismological networks, processing and interpretation of digital waveforms. They also participate, complimentary to the work of the staff of the Seismological Station of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, to the 24/7 monitoring of seismic activity in the broader Aegean Sea region. Among their routine tasks is the processing of digital seismic waveforms to determine basic seismological parameters (magnitudes, epicentres, focal depths), the submission of these parameters in international centres, the communication with society and authorities in the frequent case of strong earthquake in Greece, within the framework of the Hellenic unified Seismological Network.
